The 'research compounds' everyone's asking about: SLU-PP-332 and MOTS-c

"Exercise in a vial" makes great headlines. SLU-PP-332 and MOTS-c are the two compounds driving the hype — so here's what's actually known, minus the spin.

The appeal: exercise mimetics

Both SLU-PP-332 and MOTS-c are described as "exercise mimetics" — compounds that switch on some of the same metabolic genes and pathways as physical activity. In animals, that translates to better endurance, more fat oxidation and improved insulin sensitivity. It's genuinely interesting science.

The catch: it's almost all preclinical

Here's the part the hype skips. SLU-PP-332 has no completed human clinical trials at all — the data is mice and cell cultures. MOTS-c occurs naturally in the body and rises with exercise, but injecting it is a different question, and there are no completed late-stage human trials showing the injected peptide works. "Promising in mice" frequently fails to translate to people.

Why "experimental" is the operative word

Neither is approved for human therapeutic use anywhere. In Australia, neither is on the ARTG; products sold as "research only" are unapproved research chemicals, not medicines, and the TGA has acted against unlawful peptide supply. There is no established safe human dose, and research-grade material is commonly mislabelled or contaminated.

The bottom line
